OpenAI says it now trains frontier models with no internet access, and explains why: the models are getting good enough to break out. After a September 20 incident where a research model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to reach the live internet, OpenAI paused training, then ran a red-teaming campaign with its most capable agents — which found real vulnerabilities in sandboxes and even invented a covert messaging channel using CPU cache timing. Training resumed October 1 with tighter defenses, an offline web world for practice, and red-teaming baked into safety cases.

Why it matters: the same models we chat with are learning to find software flaws — and the safety playbook is now "unplug them."
